Jobs for May…« Return to Gardening Tips
Wednesday 18th May 2016
As a gardener you will be keen to jump out into the garden and start to prepare for the summer months and here at Fairways Garden Centre we are here to help with a list of top tips for your garden in May!
The first thing on the list is to make sure that lawn is looking luscious and green ready for all those summer BBQ parties!
Eliminate any weeds hiding in the grass by using Feed and Weed before the weeds start to seed!
The next key job is to control the slugs and snails before they munch on those lovely new garden plants! May is the prime time for the little critters so by ensuring you have them under control from the start should help protect the new bedding plants sprouting through!
Now the garden is prepped you can move onto the gardening!
At the start of the month you can begin to plant all of the summer flowering bulbs such as Dahlias, Lilies and Gladiolas these will then be ready to flourish throughout the summer bringing bursts of colour to the garden. Another area of colour that can be injected into the garden in May is the planting of summer perennials – Delphiniums, Carnations, Coral Bells and much more.
As we head through the month further flowers such as Fuchsias, Geraniums and Pansies should be ready to be planted out into the garden with other annuals such as Marigolds but do remember to watch out as we can still get cold snaps in May! If in doubt cover over night or bring into the greenhouse for overnight warmth!
Another exciting time in May is the planting of those veggies! Here at Fairways we have a wide selection of Veg plants available to buy along with Strawberries, Tomatoes and much more! What better way to celebrate those warmer months with a fresh salad home grown and enjoyed in your beautiful summer garden!
